DIY: Porsche 911 (996) Performance Exhaust Install

The standard exhaust setup in the 996 generation Porsche 911 is a bit lacking unless the Porsche Sports Exhaust option was ticked.

Fortunately, there are a number of exhaust upgrades available. One of the easiest modifications is to change the mufflers / silencers to allow for a better exhaust note.

This guide shows how to remove the stock mufflers on a 996 generation Porsche 911 and reinstall them with a Sports Exhaust.

This guide details the Fister Sport Exhaust install process. The Fister Sport Exhaust involves adding an additional connecting pipe to the original mufflers. It is also possible to have this done by a local muffler shop.

Another similar option is known as the Gundo hack wich involves a use connecting a longer piece of pipe to outer portion of the muffler. This design is based off of the factory Porsche Sports Exhaust, but does not include the valves that the factory system includes.

The steps will be similar for other sports exhaust options that use the factory mounting points. Some options may use other mounting points, so be sure to review any information provided by the manufacturer for proper mounting.
